A podcast for all things Sam Raimi

The Raimicast: Hosted by Kristy Jett and Anna Maurya

S1E4 – The Evil Dead: “The Ultimate Experience in Grueling Terror”

S1E4 – July 30, 2026

In this episode, we delve into the film that started it all for Sam – The Evil Dead (1981, or 1983, depending on what you count as a premier date). We get down and dirty into the making of the film – which by most accounts was the true grueling experience – as well as the ways Sam brought his unique style of hyper-formalism to the big screen, and the aftermath of the film’s release, especially in the United Kingdom with the Video Nasties Scandal. All this while Anna wishes for a recipe for Goody’s Chili, and Kristy shares her apologies here for a minor mistake during our TED Talk segment. To quote: “In my excitement to discuss Ted Raimi, I mistakenly attributed him shemping Ash’s legs when they were Scotty’s legs. I feel great shame and promise to do better.”

This week’s bonus image is the Italian poster for The Evil Dead, called La Casa there, which clearly and confusingly uses the Bates house from Psycho (1960). Oddly fitting, since Sam has cited Alfred Hitchcock’s film as a source of inspiration in the past!
